About This Course
The course deals with the origin of Buddhism in Nepal and its continuation through different historical periods. This course is divided into four semesters and designed to provide students the knowledge on Buddhism in Nepal.
The course deals with sources for studying history, the evolution of Buddhism, a short biography of the Buddha, the formation of different Buddhist sects, the evolution of Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna. This is designed to provide students, the knowledge on the history of Buddhism from the time of the advent of Buddha. Today Buddhism is generally understood in three different ways- a religion, philosophy and way of life. The course deals with its religious nature introducing basic Buddha’s teaching, and major traditions that stood on these grounds. Emphasis is given to maintaining an academic approach while dealing with them.
The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the general history of Buddhism. This course is to introduce students to basic Buddhist teachings and fundamentals of Buddhism with its religiosity, meditation practice and conduct within three prominent traditions-Śrāvakayāna, Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna that are promoted for harmonious coexistence.
Buddhism as a religion has been found flourished in most of the Asian countries. Wherever it reached, it synchronized the indigenous values of the land it approached that yielded the unique Buddhist practices in the Buddhist world. Therefore, Buddhism is also understood according territorial bases which characterize their specialties like Southern Buddhism, Northern Buddhism, Buddhism in the South-East Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia) and Buddhism in Central Asia (Mangolia, Afghanistan and its neighborhoods). The course deals with three prominent representative traditions each from two significant divisions of Buddhism- Southern and Northern types respectively and also introduce Buddhism in South-East Asia (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam).
