Description of the program

The Bachelor’s degree in Bhot Buddhist Philosophy is offered at Lumbini Buddhist University by the Faculty of Buddhist Studies and addresses candidates who strive to have an in-depth study of Buddhism, from the Nepalese roots of all forms of Buddhism, to its wide-ranging manifestations in Bhot Buddhism that has not only preserved the textual, meditative, oral, and scholastic traditions of Nepal for both sutra and tantra, but has also played a central role in the development of Buddhism throughout the Nepal Himalayas, Tibet, Indian Himalayas, Bhutan, Central Asia, and Mongolia.

The Bachelor in Bhot Buddhist Studies is an interdisciplinary program that draws theoretical concepts from different Bhot Buddhist Traditions and focuses on holistic and integrated methods of practices prevailed in Buddhism. The Program, in fact, focuses on a variety of both theoretical and practical aspects of Bhot Buddhism and ‎its many ‎specializations, integrating the ‎competencies of ‎the sutra, Shastra, Tantra, different Buddhist hermeneutical, and sub-hermeneutical traditions.

The course of this Bachelor’s program is designed in a way to help learners understand the various dimensions and practices that prevailed in Bhot Buddhism as well as under Buddhism. For this purpose, the emphasis of the curriculum is twofold: to build up a solid theoretical basis necessary for the practice of Bhot Buddhism and to enhance students’ operational skills through various activities. To pursue this aim, the curriculum tries to instill students with specific ethical values through various field exposures, professional supervision, and constant reflection process in the course work.

Admission eligibility

Candidates with a second division in any Intermediate or equivalent degree (Higher Secondary School) from Gumba education are eligible to apply for the program.

Admission takes place on a semester basis and, to be eligible for any program, the applying candidate shall appear for a written entrance examination and a personal interview. The maximum number of BA-Bhot Buddhist Studies candidates accepted on a semester basis is set to 45 students per class. Acceptance into Lumbini Buddhist University is based upon the Intermediate Degree Certificates scores, the past academic records and entrance examination scores. Following the selection examination process, a merit list will be published based on students’ past academic performance and entrance examination.

For a successful application and admission in Bachelor in Bhot Buddhist Studies program of the University, all the following steps must be met:

1. Duly completed and signed application form;
2. Attested copies of certificates and transcripts/mark sheets of their intermediate or equivalent degree (Higher Secondary School) or 12 years of studies from Gumba.
3. Payment receipt of the application fee for the Bachelor in Bhot Buddhist Studies program.
4. Submission of all the required documents to the University Student Admission Office.

After having produced and submitted the abovementioned documents, candidates will have to appear for the entrance examinations that will be conducted by the University.

Duration of the course

The course shall extend over a period of four years (Semester system). There will be two semesters in a year. In total, Bachelor’s in Bhot Buddhist Studies consists of eight semesters.

Medium of Instruction

The language of instruction, supervision and evaluation in the BA Bhot Buddhist Studies programs will be Bhot Language as well as English to some extent. Students are required to make presentations, submit assignments and take examinations in Bhot Language. The University will provide English courses alongside the other courses of study to enable students to reach a good proficiency in English and profit the most from the classes and other academic sessions and actions.

Teaching Methodology

The teaching methods consist of the sessions of lecture, discussion, presentation, audio-video aids and field visits.

• Lecture session: The instructor will share his/her ideas, knowledge and thoughts on different topics based upon course content, reading materials, articles, books as well as personal experiences.
• Discussion session: Students will have chance to share ideas, experiences and knowledge in the classroom in line with the lecture of the instructor.
• Presentation session: Students will make presentation on topics in respective subjects as designed by the instructor. The session aims to achieve the active participation from all students.
• Audio-visual show: The instructor will use appropriate photos, maps, recording, music, you-tube videos, documentary films and movies for the instruction.
• Field visit: The instructor will arrange field visit in Gompas and places of importance where appropriate. Likewise, the instructor will conduct field work in the topics of respective subject. The field work will either be held within local area or outside as per requirement. The cost of the field work should be reimbursed by student themselves if external funding is not secured.

Attendance

Students should have 70% of class attendance in order to appear in each semester exam. For field work and report writing and internships, students must visit the field as prerequisite of the evaluation.

Examination

The examination for a course carries 100 marks, out of which the final examination carries 60 marks (60 percent) and the internal examination carries 40 marks (40 percent). Class teacher will be responsible to conduct internal exam. The examination methods of internal examination will be:

1. Attendance – 5
2. Mid Term Exam- 15
3. Term Paper/ Oral Presentation/ Debate – 10
4. Seminar paper/ Assessment/ Book Review/ Field visit/ Report writing- 10

External Examination

1. Group A : Long Comprehensive Question – 2

2×10 = 20 Marks

2. Group B : Short -condensed Answer 6

6×5 = 30

3. Group C : Multiple Objective Question 10

10×1= 10

Lecture session will be held on the theoretical foundations of class room presentation, article or book review and debate for the purpose of internal examination. Furthermore, the classes will be held to discuss the formats and methods of the internal examination system.

Award

The performance of students shall be awarded through grading system.

Graduation

To graduate, students must complete the minimum number of required course credits in each category and a total of 120 credits, with not less than a C grade in each course. Additionally, a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.0 is required for graduation.
